Restoring mind, body, and soul
April 1st is usually a day that we all set out to play practical jokes and silly tricks. For Michael and I, it is actually our wedding anniversary. All kidding aside, eleven years ago, we happily reserved a ceremony at seven in the morning with a judge at the courthouse in Fort Collins with both sets of our parents standing by our sides. We celebrated after with breakfast at our favorite spot, Silver Grill, and were treated by our server with free cinnamon rolls. She was elated that she was hosting our wedding reception. After breakfast, we changed clothes and headed out that afternoon to New Belgium Brewery for a tour. Again, we were greeted by so many people who were excited to celebrate our happy day, and we left with free t-shirts, beer and a rock solid happy memory. It was a moment in our lives filled with the things and the people we love so much. There was no stress, no coordinator, no open bar or cake cutting, but there was plenty of love and commitment to a life together that day.

The saying “the devil is in the details” is no joke. Trying to plan out all the details for something, such as a wedding, can bring a lot of undue pressure. Now while we did celebrate our marriage a year later with a big ceremony and reception, it somehow felt like the details were not as important. We were already committed to each other and to our marriage, so everything else was just icing on the cake (pun intended). Our promises we made to each other at the courthouse in front of five people still held true when we recited them on a beach in front of a hundred people too. And they have mattered in our marriage over and over again as we have faced every mountain and valley together for the last eleven years.
All of us who are married know that it is hard work. You make a daily choice to show up for that person, no matter the circumstance. I am beyond thankful that the person who shows up for me everyday happens to also be my biggest cheerleader in life. Michael roots for me at times when I can’t even find the strength to root for myself. He is the first person I want to share good and bad news with, and he is seriously my favorite person to do life with too. There are days though where both of us have to choose to like the other person. We can annoy each other like no one else and we know all the buttons to push to make each other mad. But day after day, and year after year, we continue to commit because we know that there is no one else we would rather walk alongside in life.
See, commitment is not fussy. It does not need a bunch of fancy details or pomp and circumstance. It is making a choice and sticking to it, over and over again. It can show itself in any relationship in life, any contract or deal that you make with someone, or even in the goals you set for yourself. It does not require overthinking or letting yourself drown in the waters of self-doubt, but instead just asks that you take the first step. You choose to put yourself into a commitment so that you have a reason to keep pushing to uphold that promise, that pledge to someone else or yourself that you may not bring your best each time, but you will never walk away. So today, if you are thinking about something that you have always wanted to do, that you have been meaning to do, or someone that you love, just commit. You will find something each day beyond all that you could have planned or expected, you just need to keep at it, keep showing up, and the rest will all fall into place.
Commitment is so important for a great successful marriage…you are so incredible in expressing yourself through your writing…keep on committimg!
